Dos and Don'ts of Applying

Dos and don'ts of applying for a donation

Do

  • Read the application form carefully to ensure that the project or programme being applied for is within the scope of the Foundation.
  • Read our Grants Policy and look at the priorities for the grant type and amount that you are requesting. Alignment with these priorities is critical to funding success.
  • Use plain concise language. It tells us that you have a good understanding of your project or programme.
  • Ensure that you have thought through your project or programme carefully and that it is part of a longer term strategy.
  • Send the supporting information such as your Annual Financial Statements, and a Strategic or Business Plan if the application is for more than $10,000.
  • Upload with your application competitive quotes for any equipment and/or external services* in your request. Where possible, please try to get 3 quotes. We understand that 3 quotes can be difficult in some areas or for some types of items, so send us whatever you can get and explain the situation. If your organisation requires you to use their recommended supplier, please be sure to mention this.
  • Contact the Foundation if you are unsure about any aspect of your application or the application process.
  • Our telephone number is 022 595 8700. Call us if you have any questions – we are here to help.

* External services includes things like web/graphic design work, cost of consultants, and the like. If your application is for general operational funding, we don't require quotes for everything on it – include a detailed budget. We will also look at your previous year's expenditure.

Don't

  • DON’T Send information that is not required.
  • DON’T Inflate your budget, chances are we have seen a similar project before and you risk losing credibility.
  • DON’T Send letters of support unless they are directly relevant and add to the information being given.
